What is your dream job?
Posted by: admin in Blog Ideas on February 28th, 2009
If you, like so many people right now, lost your job and were given the chance to pick another, what would you choose? Do you feel qualified to do that job? Could you do it better than the people who have it today? Why did you select that particular job?
If you could pick the century in which you were born, which it be?
Posted by: admin in Blog Ideas on February 27th, 2009
Maybe you don’t feel like you were born during the right period of history. Maybe you’d prefer to have been born in the days of Napoleon. Maybe during the Revolutionary War. Maybe 100 years in the future. Which century would you pick and why? How would your life be better because of this?
What cliche is the most relevant to you?
Posted by: admin in Blog Ideas on February 26th, 2009
There are lots of cliches used in everyday speech. Here are just a few:
- “You’ve got another thing coming”
- “Be that as it may”
- “Put your foot down”
- “Don’t judge a book by its cover”
- “Cut to the chase”
- “The world is my oyster”
- “Politics makes strange bedfellows”
What cliche do you think is the most relevant (or at least very relevant) in your life? If you’re having trouble thinking of a cliche, you might have a look at “Cliche Finder” on the web.
What do you wish had never been invented?
Posted by: admin in Blog Ideas on February 25th, 2009
If you could erase an invention from human history, what would it be? How would the world be better off without the invention you selected? Would it be worse off in some way because of the lack of that invention?
Are news anchors getting too informal?
Posted by: admin in Blog Ideas on February 24th, 2009
I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t watch a lot of television news. In fact, if my wife didn’t turn the news on every night I might never see the news at all. But there’s one thing about our local news anchors that is really starting to irritate me. It’s not the fact that they seem to stumble over their words almost every night. It’s not the number of “soft” news stories they run, or the number of stories that are thinly veiled commercials. It’s the informality of their speech.
On one of our local stations, the news anchors seem to be bending over backwards to seem “cool”. For example, if they’re talking about money, it’s pretty common for them to say something like “For a couple of bucks, you can pick one of these up yourself.” or “The thieves got away with cash and merchandise with an estimated value of three thousand bucks.” If they’re discussing jewelry or some other kind of valuable item, they might comment after the story that “I sure could use some bling like that.” Maybe I’m the only one who finds these colloquialisms irritating and unprofessional.
How about you? Are your local news anchors too informal to suit you? Are they too formal? Is there a “happy medium”?
Does religion make good people do evil things?
Posted by: admin in Blog Ideas on February 24th, 2009
I read the following quote recently:
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
- Steven Weinberg
Without touching on any specific religions, I have to wonder if there isn’t some merit to this statement. When we look at some of history’s bloodiest wars, most infamous tragedies, and most violent behavior, religion seems to play a part… especially when members of one religion have a dispute with members of another. I’m not trying to imply that religion in itself is bad, or that there is anything at all wrong with being religious. I guess what I’m saying is that people seem to be willing to more strenuously defend their religious beliefs than, say, their favorite sports team. What do you think? Does religion make otherwise good people do “bad” things? Will people act out of character to defend their beliefs?
Who are you?
Posted by: admin in Blog Ideas on February 22nd, 2009
While reading a blogging resource recently, I was struck by a suggestion that bloggers should have an “about me” page or article on their site. This article should provide a few sentences about who you are. If you blog about a specific subject, then you should include information explaining where your expertise comes from. What do you do when you’re not blogging? What hobbies and interests do you have? That sort of thing. Problogger.net has a good post describing how to write your “About Me” page.
If you haven’t done so already, why not write YOUR “About Me” page now? If you already have one, maybe it’s time to update it?
What are your favorite resources?
Posted by: admin in Blog Ideas on February 22nd, 2009
If you blog about a particular subject area, such as automotive repair, there are probably some resources you refer to when you need additional information about a topic. For example, you might rely on little-known auto manufacturer web sites for details about certain cars or buy your parts from certain stores to save money. Why not pick a few of your favorite resources and talk about them in your blog?
Have you commented on someone else’s blog?
Posted by: admin in Blog Ideas on February 23rd, 2009
On Problogger.net, there’s an article from Lisa Newton of the Travelin’ Local blog describing how leaving a comment on a blog increased traffic to her own blog by 975% in a single day. I can back up this claim with my own experience. Frequently, when I see a post on an “A-list” blog like Slashdot.org or CNet.com that discusses a topic I’ve covered on my own blog, I’ll try to post a relevant comment that includes a link back to my site. When I’ve done this on a regular basis, I’ve seen my traffic grow.
Have you commented on someone else’s blog recently? If not, why not get out there and try it? You might be surprised at the traffic it brings your way… and the comments it might bring to your own site.
