Do we need a “Bill of Responsibilities”?

When I read the following quote recently, I wondered if there wasn’t something to it:

We have the Bill of Rights. What we need is a Bill of Responsibilities.
Bill Maher, comedian and commentator, 1995

It seems to me that more and more often we see people feeling entitled to things (e.g., “the right to a college education”) while not accepting responsibility for them (e.g., not paying the college loans off).  Do you think our Constitution needs a “Bill of Responsibilities” to go with the “Bill of Rights”?  What sort of responsibilities should we be held to as citizens of the US (or your own country if you’re outside the US)?

What strange gadget have you seen recently (or owned)?

Over at Kotula’s, you can pick up a Talking Toilet Paper Spindle for a mere $9.98 (as of this writing on 12/15/08). According to their product listing, the “Talking toilet paper spindle allows you to record (and re-record) a personal message that greets everyone who uses toilet paper in your bathroom.”

That’s certainly one of the stranger gadgets I’ve seen recently. How about you?

What is the most expensive gift you’ve ever given?

For me, it’s probably the jewelry I’ve given my wife the past couple of years. This year it will be a couple of items.  How about you?  What’s the most expensive gift you ever gave someone?  Did they appreciate it?  Why did you give such a large gift?  What made you choose that particular gift?

Is “truth” objective or subjective?

Is truth a “universal” and the same for everyone (i.e., objective) or is it more like Obi-Wan Kenobi said in Star Wars: “You’re going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view” (subjective)? Is it a little of both?

Are the best things in life really free?

It’s often said that the best things in life are free.  Do you agree?  Are there any of the “best things” in life that aren’t free?  What are they?

What’s “Greek to you” if you’re a Greek?

Elsewhere on the web I was reading through a list of silly (often just stupid) questions that asked “What do Greeks say when they don’t understand something?”  In other words, they can’t say “It’s all Greek to me” because if they did, that would mean they understand it since they ARE Greek?  That got me to thinking about all the different little sayings we have like that.

For example: “That’s like the pot calling the kettle black.”  What difference does that make?  Maybe it’s a silver pot and a black kettle?  But even if they’re both black, would that make the pot wrong?  It’s kind of a silly thing to say on the surface.

Take a look at some cliche’d statement you’ve seen or heard recently?  Does the statement stand up to scrutiny?  (There’s an example right there… Would just looking at something make it fall over?)  If it doesn’t make sense, why do people say it?

100 Blog Topics

Chris Brogan, who blogs mostly about social media and communities, posted a list of “100 Blog Topics I Hope YOU Write About” on his blog.  Since I’m not a big “social media” person (I guess I’m more of a loner), I can’t speak to whether these are topics you might find great, interesting, or even useful.  However, there’s a lot there and you might find something that sparks you to blog about an area listed there or something completely unrelated.  Here are a few of the topics Chris hopes someone blogs about:

How I Use Facebook
Ways to Save a Bad Time at a Conference
Just Jump Into Podcasting- Heres How
Making a Miniseries
What I Spend Money On
Ten Guilty Pleasures
Your Ideas And My Ideas- How We Play Together

I don’t want to steal Chris’ whole list, just give you a feel for what’s there and whether it might be worth you going to take a look at the whole list of 100 topics.  If something above sounds useful or interesting, follow the link above to his blog and the whole list.

Your New Year’s Resolutions for the World

“List” types of posts are kind of fun to write (to me, anyway), so here’s another idea that can be made either serious or silly depending on what your blog is like…

Think of 10 things about the world that bother you. Write them up as “New Year’s Resolutions for the World” in either a serious or humorous vein. Here are a couple of examples to help you get started:

In a serious vein:

In 2009, I resolve that we encourage the US government to make alternative energy research a top priority, giving it not just lip service but significant funding and freedom to try out all kinds of ideas.

In a humorous style:

In 2009, let’s see if we can put an end to cell phone use during movies. If you’re in the audience and you hear a cell phone ring during a movie, grab a couple of popcorn kernels and launch them at the cell phone holder. Imagine the effect on the “popcorn recipient” if the entire audience beaned them in the back of the head with a corn kernel! I think they’d get the message…

Remember, this is your list, so make it what you want - and have fun with it.

What’s your reaction to…?

Over on Taylor Long’s blog, I found a blog idea that supposedly hasn’t been used but looks like it could be fun to do if you have a digital camera and some time. Basically, you take something that you want to review quickly, like a new album from a favorite artist. Then, you decide what your reaction to that album is. Were you shocked? Elated? Disgusted? Confused? Whatever you’re basic reaction is, make the appropriate face, posture, and/or hand gestures and photograph it. (Or, if you’re the shy type, draw a cartoon version.) Then post your review, starting with the picture of your reaction. Readers of the blog who may not have time to read your whole review can probably infer from the picture what you thought of the product. Could make for a fun blog to do, offering nothing but your reactions to things…

What will you never do?

At some point in the recent past, I’ve mentioned that “top 10″ type lists seem to drive some amount of traffic to web sites. I recently read a blog article by “Jamie” that listed “10 Things You Will Never See Me Do!” and thought it sounded like a fun idea. Have a look about it and think about what 10 things people will never see YOU doing.
